October 5th marks World Teacher’s Day. The day was created in 1994 and is intended to shine a light on improving working conditions for all educators. Furthermore, the day honors the 1966 signing of a “recommendation concerning the ‘Status of Teachers’.” The International Labor Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) co-authored the document in an effort to “target and investigate the status and situation of teachers across the world.”
Intention of World Teacher’s Day
It should be noted that teachers all over the world experience different levels of hardship. Hardships include long hours, wage issues, limited resources and funding concerns, etc. Although the factors vary from place to place, the stresses and anxieties for educators persist. Education is continually evolving and there are always new challenges.
2022’s theme is “The transformation of education begins with teachers.” This year’s theme highlights one of the most recent and all encompassing issues to date: Covid-19.
