Fishing in Alaska is a great experience and attracts tourists to the state each year. If nothing else, gaining the experience of fishing in Alaska is something to consider as there are a variety of fishing options. Due to the high risks, planning ahead and being prepared are extremely important.
Life Jackets Are Necessary
Alaskan waters are cold, far colder than most fishing conditions in other places. A major concern is falling overboard while deep sea fishing or lake fishing. Hypothermia is the primary concern people discuss but the most common cause of death is swimming failure. Swimming failure occurs due to the body attempting to keep organs warm and pulling blood from extremities to the organs. When this happens, people lose the ability to tread the water. Life jackets allow a person fallen overboard to float long enough to be rescued.
Life jackets are also helpful for river fishing. Serious injuries, and even death, can be avoided by wearing a life jacket.
Always Check Your Surroundings
Unlike many fishing locations, Alaska is unique in that you may be interrupted by other wildlife. Plan ahead and prepare to see bears and moose along your fishing excursion. While river fishing, bears may be nearby and it is important to stay alert. Remember that splashing fish attract bears. Never let a bear take fish from you, it will cause the bear to associate people with food in the future. If you are fishing and see a bear, draw in your line and make sure your fish have enough line to be underwater. You may need to cut the line completely.
Always clean up after yourself while fishing, never leave a fish carcass on the bank – throw it back in the water.
Fishing in Alaska is rewarding and fun but does require additional safety considerations. The Merdes Law Office has helped injured Alaskans for more than 30 years, it’s who we are. And while we hope you never need us… We’re here if you do.
