In Alaska, we see more roundabouts established each year throughout the state. Roundabouts are beneficial at intersections, making traffic flow easier and safer. The Federal Highway Administration says when roundabouts replace traffic signals at intersections, car accident rates drop.
The number of people with severe injuries and overall rate of crashes drop significantly with roundabouts.
Severe crashes are reduced by 78% at signalized intersections and 82% in two-way stop-controlled intersections. Roundabouts are more effective at controlling speed than other methods because drivers must slow down. Since there are no traffic signals or stop signs to impede traffic, the number of drivers waiting impatiently to enter the intersection also drops.
Federally funded highway intersections may consider roundabouts and replacing existing freeway ramps is also a good idea. Roundabouts work equally well in rural and urban settings too.
It is important to understand how to properly use a roundabout while driving.
Drivers entering the roundabout should yield to those already in the roundabout. If there are multiple lanes in a roundabout, never change lanes. Do not stop in the roundabout and do not drive directly next to an oversize vehicle. Always look for pedestrians when entering or exiting a roundabout. Remember to use your blinker when exiting the roundabout.
Even when safety measures are properly taken, automobile accidents still occur at intersections. If you suffer injuries as a result of a drivers negligence, you may be able to receive compensation.
