Imagine driving down the road when you suddenly collide with a recreational vehicle (RV) that cut you off with its trailer; or an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) that was blown into your lane by the wind. Accidents such as these may result in serious injuries and can often be prevented.
Avoiding RV and ATV Accidents
The person driving an RV or ATV should be educated in how to handle the vehicle, even in adverse conditions. Many ATVs and RVs are designed for unusual terrain and weather conditions, however they can still pose a threat to others if not driven safely.
A driver should understand how to back up and take corners in an RV or ATV. Depending on the kind of car or truck, trailers may go the opposite direction when a vehicle pulls out. It is imperative to understand how to travel while towing trailers behind a vehicle. These also require more time when you pull into traffic.
When traveling on the roads, people traveling by ATV or RV should never weave in or out of traffic. RVs aren’t designed for sudden lane changes and can get out of control. Quick actions can result in over-steering, which causes a driver to lose control and go out of his or her lane.
RVs in particular have high wind resistance, which can be an issue if there are high winds. Unexpected wind can cause the vehicle to push over or get dragged off the road in the right conditions. Drivers traveling in high winds should move slowly and pull over when possible.
If you’re in a crash because of another driver failing to understand their vehicle, it’s your right to hold them accountable. No one should drive any vehicle until they’re confident in their skills.
