Hunting is popular all over the United States, but it is often a way of life in Alaska. Maintaining safety and legal regulations is essential to successful hunting. Ensure everyone in your family is well prepared before leaving on any hunting trip by following these hunting safety tips. Remember, you are responsible for the safety of yourself and those around you.
General Hunting Safety
Always tell someone where you will be hunting and when you intend to return. This is important in Alaska due to the remoteness of most hunting locations. Familiarize yourself with the area you intend to hunt before your trip. Check weather reports for the hunting area before leaving and bring a map and compass. Never rely solely on your cell phone for these resources.
A basic survival kit to prepare for overnight stays in the field should contain a rope, a knife, water, waterproof matches, an emergency shelter, and first aid supplies. Bring clothing appropriate for the weather and be prepared for the worst possible conditions. Remember that Alaska weather can be unpredictable and colder than expected. Utilize layering techniques to pull away moisture while retaining body warmth. Always bring rain gear and carry a spare set of dry clothes. Wear “hunter orange” as your outermost layer over your gear so you are visible to other hunters.
Weapon Safety
Check hunting equipment before and after each outing to maintain it properly. Make sure to familiarize yourself with equipment operation before trying to use it in the field, especially if you are borrowing equipment. Treat your weapon as if it is always loaded, even if it’s not. Know where your hunting partners are located at all times. Clearly identify your target before shooting to prevent unfortunate accidents.
Hunting With Dogs
If accompanied by a dog, the dog should also wear hunter orange or other visible color on a vest, leash, coat or bandanna. Determine if dogs are allowed in the area before the trip by reviewing the State regulations. Be alert when hunting near developed areas and trails. Other people are enjoying the forest as well.
