Motorcyclists constantly face the danger of getting into an accident, especially when traveling alone on the road. Unfortunately, many of these motorcycle crashes result in the motorcyclist suffering serious injuries. Countersteering is a great technique to learn to avoid potential life-threatening collisions.
What is countersteering?
According to the Hurt Report, many United States motorcyclists lack countersteering skills. Countersteering involves a brief steering in the opposite direction than the motorcyclist wishes to turn before going into the actual turn. This puts the bike into a lean and allows for more agile and nimble turning.
When countersteering, more time is required for an average curve versus a mild curve. If the turn is particularly sharp, then additional countersteering time may be needed. However, rather than countersteering, many motorcyclists presented with an obstacle will over-apply the rear brake, under-apply the front brake and skid, losing control of the bike. This is when serious and sometimes injuries happen.
A sharp countersteering induced swerve is such an important skill to learn for motorcyclists because they are far more likely to avoid a potential accident than they would be otherwise. However, motorcyclists must practice this skill to become familiar with the technique for different curves and their bike, depending on the situation.
Stay alert for motorcyclists on curves.
Alaska has many roads that run with the land, including curves and turns of many capacities. When driving around a curve in a vehicle, slow down. Look for oncoming traffic and closely look for potential motorcyclists. It can be hard to see around a curve, especially when traveling at high speeds. Motorcyclists need drivers to practice extra caution on the roads to ensure everyone’s safety.
