To prevent back, knee, and shoulder injury when lifting heavy or awkward items, be sure to understand how to safely lift objects. Inappropriately lifting heavy or oddly-shaped objects can have serious health consequences.
How To Safely Lift And Carry Heavy Objects
Before picking up something, prepare and plan your lift. Assess the weight, shape, and size of the object needing to be moved. Be sure of where you can place your hands in order to grip and support the object. Plan the route you want to take and be sure it’s clear of any obstacles. Know where the object is going to be set down.
When lifting, position your body as close as possible and try to keep your elbows and arms close to your body. Tighten your stomach muscles when lifting to help keep your back straight and using your knees to bend and lift. Do not twist or jerk while lifting. If the load is particularly heavy, consider how to move it in smaller portions or getting help from someone.
Always look ahead of where you’re going and walk smoothly without twisting or turning the body. Your toes, knees, hips, and shoulders should face the same direction when carrying something. Set down the item similarly to how you lifted it by keeping your back straight and using your knees to bend.
Inappropriately Moving Or Lifting Items Can Cause Serious Injuries
Often times, people injure themselves in their homes by moving or lifting objects in an awkward manor. Improper lifting is also a leading causes of workplace injuries.
Twisting and turning while bending is a commonly cited series of movements that causes back injuries. Further, lifting loads inadequately causes strains and sprains. Manually moving or carrying loads that are either too large or too heavy can be hazardous.
