Child abduction is a serious concern and parents must take steps to constantly protect their children. There are things parents can do to keep children alert and safe from potential abduction.
Protect Children
Protect children from strangers. Do not label clothing or backpacks with names or identifying information. Abductors can use the information to gain the child’s trust. Know common lures and teach children about the lures used. For example, abductors will often use a dog to spark a conversation with a child, promise to provide candy or money, and in some instances will ask for help. Teach children that adults do not need to ask children for help and if an adult asks for help, the child should run the other direction.
Teach Accountability
Parents should know where children are and who they are with at all times. Explain to children the importance of being honest for their safety. Children may often think that parents want to control or restrict their activities not realizing that communication is the best tool to prevent abduction. Develop rules for children to call or text if plans change while they are with friends or family. Further, explain the importance of the rule so that children take it seriously.
Communication
Continuous communication is important in protecting children from being abducted. Discuss abduction regularly with your children so they are prepared in bad situations and know how to react. Give children instructions for different scenarios, such as what to do if they are at a friend’s house and do not feel safe. Children should also know what to do when separated from you while at a store or other public place. Remember, knowledge is power and the more you talk to children about the risks of abduction, the more aware and alert they can be.
