International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) is a global event held August 31 each year. IOAD’s purpose is to raise general awareness of overdose and to break the negative stigma around drug-related deaths. It also acknowledges the grief of families and friends suffering loss, or individuals with a permanent injury due to drug overdose.
Thousands of people die every year from drug overdose. In 2018, more than 125 deaths per day occurred due to overdose. Individuals suffering from opioid overdose come from all walks of life. IOAD shares information showing overdose death is preventable.
If you or a loved one has a prescription opioid medication, learn as much as you can about the drug. Between 21 – 29 percent of people with prescriptions for alleviating chronic pain misuse the prescription opioid. Further, between 8 – 12 percent of opioid users develop an opioid use disorder. Understanding and managing prescriptions is important for users.
It’s important to know what side effects and risks come with prescription medications. Read the facts about drugs and understand their affect on Americans as a whole. Reducing the stigma so those struggling can get help with overdose is an important step for society. Help raise awareness by acknowledging the crisis.
