October is National Crime Prevention month to raise awareness for preventing crime. The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) hosts events annually to raise awareness, share resources and remind communities to look out for each other. Crime prevention is a public concern and requires everyone to help make communities safer.
Stay Alert
Stay alert for potential criminals or abnormal activity. If you see a vehicle in your neighborhood that looks out of place, do not ignore it. If you are at a playground with your child and see a suspicious person, report the person and alert other parents in your area.
Report
Report suspicious activity or people especially if you see the crime in action. If you see someone attempting to forcibly enter a house or car, report the activity to your local policy agency. Reporting the person or activity may save a life. If you see someone running from a house or business, immediately report the person. Write down information about the person’s appearance and the crime so you do not forget important details. Communicate with people around you so they may also stay alert.
Protect
Protecting your community is a public concern and reporting a crime only takes a few minutes of your time. Create safer communities by doing your part to protect yourself and others around you.
