Speed limits are set to protect drivers and are determined by many factors. Speeding is dangerous and can harm not only you or your passengers, but also other drivers or people on the side of the road. The change of seasons in Alaska approaches quickly and many drivers do not prepare for the change in traffic patterns or weather conditions. Winter weather means Alaskan roads are more unpredictable and makes speeding more dangerous than normal.
Prepare
Drivers speed for a number of reasons including running late, being overwhelmed, and becoming aggressive on the road. Allow yourself additional time to travel on Alaskan roads as weather conditions change. When ice is present on the road, it increases stopping time and makes stopping more difficult. By preparing you allow yourself enough time to reach your destination safely.
Don’t Impede Traffic
The best way to avoid an accident is to slow down and move to the right side of the road. If others around you are speeding, do not attempt to stay in their way to slow them down. Intentionally interrupting the flow of traffic is dangerous and may cause road rage for other drivers. It is safer to move over and allow speeding vehicles to pass you so that if an accident occurs due to their negligence, you are not involved.
If you are in an accident and suffer injuries due to another driver speeding, you may need to hire an attorney to pursue claims for your injuries.
