October is domestic violence awareness month. Domestic violence is a serious concern and with COVID-19 forcing many people into quarantine for weeks at a time, awareness is more important than ever. With increasing concerns, signals can help alert others when domestic violence is a concern.
Video Signal
Victims of domestic violence can alert others without leaving a digital trace by using a video signal. While on a video call, the victim will first hold up their hand and then trap their thumb inside their fist.
If you are on a video call with someone and they use this signal, contact authorities immediately. Your action could save a life.
Silent Beacon
The Silent Beacon is a device that alerts others in the event of an emergency. The Silent Beacon is a Bluetooth enabled device that connects to an app and alerts up to seven contacts via text, email, phone call – or all three. The device is portable and discrete and allows victims of domestic violence to quickly send for help.
Create A Plan
Protecting yourself in potentially violent situations is important. Create a plan to handle domestic violence situations based on your own needs and resources. There is a hotline available to discuss your options: 800-799-7233, TTY 800-787-3224.
