The Movember Foundation works to raise awareness and funding in support of men’s health. The goal is to lessen premature deaths to men and raise awareness. Movember also raises money through donations and fundraisers to help fund research and other projects focusing on men’s health.
History
Movember started in 2003 in Australia with 30 friends growing moustaches to raise awareness for men’s health. Since 2003, the Movember Foundation has funded over 1,250 men’s health projects. The idea started as a joke between two friends. The foundation has grown globally with a goal of reducing male premature deaths by 25% by 2030.
Mental Health
COVID-19 has increased the need for awareness surrounding mental health. The Movember Foundation recommends using the acronym ALEC to acknowledge and address men’s health.
A – Ask: Ask questions when someone seems “off” from their “normal” behaviors.
L – Listen: Listen without interruptions or judgment. Avoid trying to offer solutions to problems and listen.
E – Encourage Action: Encourage the person to take action and get help. Offer support through encouragement.
C – Check-in: Make sure to check on the person and arrange to catch up. If you are worried about someone’s safety, contact emergency services.
Cancer
The Movember Foundation focuses on raising awareness for prostate and testicular cancer. One in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. It is a real concern and men need to be aware of the risks. U.S. Research has indicated that there are over 28 different types of prostate cancer. The Movember Foundation also focuses on testicular cancer research and improving the quality of life for those suffering.
Men’s health is an important topic to discuss and continue supporting. You can fundraise, donate and raise awareness for the Movember Foundation. Additionally, during the month of November, men around the globe participate in “Grow A Mo” to raise money and awareness. Do your part to raise awareness and support men’s health.
