November is Veteran and Military Families Month in recognition of the sacrifices of service members and their families. There are many ways to support our veterans, service members, and their families. As the holidays near, it is important to provide support however possible.
2020 Raises Concerns
COVID-19 has changed the way veterans interact with others and has added more stressors. During much of 2020, service members around the world have been restricted to the area surrounding their military assignment. Military suicides have increased more than 20% when comparing 2019 and 2020 suicide rates around the same time of year. Check on your family and friends serving in the military, especially as the holidays approach. Additionally check on veterans no longer serving in the military.
Support Our Military Service Members
There are many ways to support service members and their families. Militarybenefits.info has great ideas to provide support. Additionally, spread awareness and let military members know there are resources available and they are not alone. A quick phone call to a loved one can change their entire mood or a text letting them know you are thinking of them. People may also donate items like turkeys to families or care packages to deployed service members.
Showing support can be done through a lot of ways. It is important to understand that during these uncertain times, we as a community should look out for our service members and their families.
