Alaska communities are not immune to the effects of hunger and homelessness. With days getting colder, and shorter in daylight, the homeless and hungry near us are in greater need. Find a way to make a difference for those suffering with hunger or homelessness this winter.
Over 43 million people across the country are living below the poverty level. Approximately 10% of the population in Alaska are affected by poverty. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, even more families are experiencing hardships this year. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is November 15 – 22, 2020. If you’re in a position to help others, please find a way to donate to those in need in your community.
Ways To Help Those In Need
Support a local food bank near you by donating non-perishable food items. For example, canned goods, dry goods, and dehydrated foods are great items to donate. Also, peanut butter, jelly, tea bags, coffee (ground), pancake and cake mixes, granola bars, and baby foods make great donations.
If your town has a soup kitchen or homeless shelter, call and see what items the hungry and homeless communities are in need of. For instance, many people in Alaska who struggle with homelessness or impoverishment lack adequate winter clothing. Accordingly, donating items like hats, gloves, scarves, warm socks, cold weather jackets, and winter boots can be extremely helpful.
Reach out to organizations in your area to see how you can help those in need. Many business and non-profits throughout Alaska provide assistance to those in need with fundraisers, food-drives, and donation events throughout the winter months.
