More than 36 million people are affected by the HIV virus. Since it’s discovery in the early 80’s, more than 35 million people have died due to HIV or AIDS. More than 1 million Americans are living with this disease, of which 1 in 7 are unaware they have the virus.
What Is HIV / AIDS?
HIV is a non-curable virus that attacks the body’s immune system. When treated before seriously damaging an individual’s immune system, HIV is less likely to develop into AIDS. Unfortunately, AIDS patients generally have a life expectancy of 3 years.
When the virus is detected in early adulthood, and before causing great damage to the immune system, patients often have a continued life expectancy of 50 years. However, if left untreated it can develop into AIDS within a decade. While these diseases remain incurable, treatments plans help manage symptoms.
The virus can be transferable through blood, vaginal and rectal fluids, semen, and breastmilk. However, it is not transferrable through air or water, or through casual contact.
December 1st is AIDS Awareness Day every year. AIDS Awareness Day was the first ever global health awareness day, founded in 1988.
It’s important to be aware of the risks of transmitting this disease and the related risks of developing AIDS. Further, it’s important to support the HIV/AIDS community and continue to search for cures. Many organizations encourage communities to get tested for HIV/AIDS. There are numerous sources which provide information on treatment options and availabilities.
