The American Burn Association annually organizes National Burn Awareness Week. Burn victims and groups provide resources to the general public. When we work together to spread awareness, we protect each other and our community. This year, National Burn Awareness Week is February 7 – 13, 2021. There are many causes of burn injuries. This includes improper exposure to fire, hot liquids, steam, chemicals, and electricity.
Electric Burns
Electric burns are a serious concern. Severity ranges from a minor shock to serious scars and treatment. The American Burn Association provides “Amps to Zap”. This is an alphabet focusing on ways to avoid electrical burns. For instance, the two primary ways to prevent electrical burns include: properly using cords and proper maintenance.
Cord Use
Extension cords may cause electrical fires and burns with improper use. Check cords before use to ensure safety. You should never use broken, frayed, or old extension cords. Always use extension cords properly, for example do not use indoor extension cords outside in the elements. Cold weather can cause cords to crack and break.
Major appliances are a concern and can throw a breaker or overheat an outlet. Do not plug major appliances into a power strip or extension cord. Never run an extension cord under a rug or carpet to avoid overheating. Unplug cords at the base instead of pulling on the wire itself to avoid breaking wires internally. It is important to discard of appliances or extension cords that are broken or fray to avoid potential fires, shocks and burns.
Maintenance
Many electrical fires and burns are avoidable with proper maintenance. Major appliances and HVAC systems should receive maintenance annually to avoid potential disaster. Using proper outlets with correct wattage for appliances is important for safety. Appliances such as generators require a transfer switch to avoid back feed. If you have a broken plug or outlet in your home, contact an electrician to make repairs. Do not use switches or outlets that feel hot to the touch. Broken plugs, outlets, and loose wires are dangerous and can cause a fire.
Many fires are preventable, protect your home and family to avoid potential injuries with proper maintenance and use. Spread awareness by sharing resources with others and practice safe habits in your home.
