June 6th – June 12th, 2021 is America the Beautiful Week. The intention is to celebrate the beautiful landscapes and landmarks in the United States. While encouraging everyone to take pride in the beauty of their state. As well as, take a moment to appreciate the many things that make their state beautiful. For examples, Alaskans, even from afar can view Denali’s majestic peak.
Creation of “America the Beautiful”
In 1893, Katharine Bates, the poet and writer took a trip to Colorado Springs. While there Bates decided to climb Pike’s Peak. As a result, Bates became overwhelmed with the beautiful view. Subsequently, the astonishing view and sites from her travels were her inspiration to write “America the Beautiful.” The poem’s original publication was July 4, 1895. Later, in 1904, Bates revised the words and re-published the piece. In addition, she made final edits to the poem in 1913. Years later the poem’s words were used as lyrics and sung with popular folk tunes. Currently, “America the Beautiful” is set to Samuel Ward’s tune “Materna.” In 1926 there was an effort to make the song the national anthem. The Library of Congress states the song; “…conveys an attitude of appreciation and gratitude for the nation’s extraordinary physical beauty and abundance, without triumphalism.”
