World Population Day
July 11, 2021 is World Population Day. World Population Day became an annual event in 1990. An annual day was established to bring attention to the urgency caused by population issues. The United Nations and United Nations Population Fund work to provide education and guidance regarding population growth. As well as, how population affects access to resources. While also, promoting access to health services for all people. Especially those most displaced by population issues.
Origins
In 1987 the world celebrated the Day of Five Billion. The day the world population reached an estimated 5 billion people. With the popularity and interest of this event, the UN decided to pursue making this an annual day. The UN continues to research population, growth trends and how these growing numbers effect the world. The UN also works with countries around the globe to help ensure access to health services. While also working to educate individuals of their rights.
2021
The theme for 2021 is Rights and Choices Are the Answer. Bringing focus on the importance of reproductive health and rights for all people. The boom in population effects “economic development, employment, income distribution, poverty and social protections.” World Population Day is working to provide information and help policymakers “…understand how many people are living on the planet, where they are, how old they are, and how many people will come after them.”
