Monday, July 19th Global Hug Your Kid Day is observed. This holiday occurs annually, every third Monday in July. Founder, Michelle Nichols started Global Hug Your Kid Day in 2008. The celebration began a decade after her son died from brain cancer at the age of eight. The purpose of this day is to remind parents to hug their children. As well as, remind them how much you love them.
Science Behind Hugs
Hugs can be a greeting or goodbye and show support or affection to people in our lives. For this special day, hugging your child will show how much they mean to you. Furthermore, receiving a hug feels good. The hormone called oxytocin releases when we are hugged. This hormone helps lower blood pressure, heart rate and the stress hormone cortisol. Oxytocin reduces anxiety and can improve your mood, memory, bonding, and closeness. Also, endorphins release in the brain which result in feelings of pleasure. For a hug to be beneficial, those participating must trust each other and want to be hugged. Whereas, an unwanted hug will cause the opposite effects and increase stress.
How to Observe
Clearly, the best way to observe is to give your child a hug on Global Hug Your Kid Day. Founder, Michelle Nichols, created this day so parents would remember to be present and spend time with their children. This day is meant to encourage hugs between parents and children throughout the whole year. If you don’t have kids, you can hug other loved ones. The physical touch of a hug can make you and others feel happier.
