September 27th marks World Tourism Day. This annual celebration attempts to promote tourism, its importance to society and impact on society. The day of celebration has occurred since 1980. According to the World Tourism Organization “This date was chosen to coincide with an important milestone in world tourism: the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on 27 September 1970.” The statutes help to better track and understand how tourism affects the world.
Background
“The timing of World Tourism Day is particularly appropriate in that it comes at the end of the high season in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of the season in the southern hemisphere.” As stated on the UNWTO website. Tourism helps drive economic development and opportunities outside of big cities. Often shining a light on communities that otherwise would be left behind. The Covid-19 pandemic has caused massive social and economic impact. Causing harm to developed and undeveloped countries. The United Nations reports: “marginalized groups and the most vulnerable have been hit hardest of all.”
2021
The theme for 2021 is Tourism for Inclusive Growth. A restart of tourism will help with recovery and growth. However, moving forward it is important that growth benefits as many as possible. While people struggle to physically tour, there are still ways to help. You can donate directly to the United Nations. Shop from local vendors and small businesses in your area. As well as, explore small business in other countries. Shopping from home if you can. However, maintaining safe and healthy practices, one can travel or purchase items in person.
