Mitten Tree Day is celebrated annually on December 6th. It can be a fun holiday that encourages the use and giving of mittens. Mittens are used to keep your hands warm when playing in the snow. They come in handy when you build a snowman. Mittens can also be a great gift because of the fun and colorful patterns.
History of Mitten Tree Day
The exact details of how this holiday was created is unknown. It is believed that schoolteachers formed it during Christmas time. This holiday is often said to have emerged from a book called “The Mitten Tree” written by Candace Christiansen. The storyline focused on a woman who missed her grown-up children. One day while she was walking in the cold weather she saw a few children waiting for the school bus. She noticed that the children weren’t wearing mittens and couldn’t play in the snow. Thus, she came up with the idea to knit mittens and put them on the tree near the bus stop. With this new project, she stopped missing her own children as much.
How to Celebrate
The best way to celebrate is to go shopping for mittens for yourself, your friends and family or those in need. You can showcase your mittens by taking pictures of them and post on social media. Another creative way is to decorate a tree with mittens. Mitten Tree Day is a fun way to give back and reminds us how useful mittens are.
