Caroling is one of many ways to share joy with family and friends. Most commonly, people enjoy singing carols during the winter holidays. Since 2001, December 20 is officially Go Caroling Day, as it’s close to the winter solstice and Christmas holiday. This year, it may not be possible to gather together to sing and share the holiday spirit. There are many ways to still enjoy singing carols with your loved ones while apart, or social distancing.
History Of Carols
Though caroling today is commonly understood to be specifically related to Christmas, historically it was common to carol during birthdays, weddings, holidays, and other celebrations as well. Overtime, carols became more frequently written for Christmas and winter holidays. Eventually, the carol became nearly exclusively linked to the Christmas holiday. Christmas carols are also known as noels, songs, or hymns.
Ways To Enjoy Caroling Together – Even When Apart
Despite limitations of distance between friends and family, or possible mandates that effect gathering during the pandemic, there are still ways to enjoy caroling this holiday season. Singing in a group call, or video call, with your family and friends is a great option. Another alternative is to send a video recording of yourself, or a group, singing carols via text or email. Additionally, using social media and posting a video, or making a live video, are other fun ways to enjoy caroling without gathering in groups.
Create a new tradition by challenging friends and family to writing a new carol and sharing it together. Maybe start a caroling competition and vote for best new carol, best overall performance, and most enthusiastic caroler. If you do participate in the opportunity to sing carols in a group with friends and loved ones, remember to stay safe, warm, and use masks and hand sanitizer as needed.
