The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines aggressive driving as:
“when an individual commits a combination of moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property.”
Aggressive driving is a very serious problem which too often leads to injury and death. Studies show many Americans engage in speeding on a regular basis. Other unsafe conduct, such as entering an intersection just after a light turns from yellow to red; failing to come to a complete stop at stop signs; and making an illegal U turn are equally unsafe driving choices. The NHTSA asserts that drivers are willing to engage in other unsafe behaviors which constitute aggressive driving at alarming rates, including:
- 12% of drivers admit to making angry, insulting, or obscene gestures and comments toward other drivers;
- 10% admit to cutting in front of other drivers;
- 6% admit to passing on the shoulder in heavy traffic; and
- 3% admit to passing in a no passing zone
