A new year is upon us, that means it is time to review your auto insurance. It is important to have enough insurance in case something happens.
Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements In Alaska
The state of Alaska requires drivers carry liability insurance. Alaska law states that drivers carry at least $50,000 of bodily injury coverage per person and $100,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident. Drivers also must carry $25,000 in property damage protection.
Drivers in areas of the state where registration is not a requirement do not need liability insurance. However, drivers with six or more points on their license in the previous five years must buy insurance regardless of the exemption. Drivers must also be able to prove they have insurance at all times. Failure to provide proof of insurance may result in a license suspension. Cars may also be impounded for failure to provide proof of insurance.
Although states may have minimum levels of auto insurance, some crashes may cause damages exceeding minimum requirements. For example, a serious crash may result in long-term injuries. These kind of injuries may reduce a victim’s ability to earn a living and limit his or her quality of life. When this occurs, he or she may be require insurance beyond what an at-fault driver’s policy insures.
Other Insurance Options
Companies offer additional insurance beyond what is a requirement, such as uninsured (UM), under-insured (UIM) and medical payments coverage. These types of coverage are beyond the minimum and protect you in cases where damages exceed at-fault parties insurance available.
It may be worthwhile to contact a personal injury attorney for those receiving injuries in automobile accidents. An attorney may be able to review evidence in a case to establish negligence of a third-party causing injuries. If successful in court, a driver with injuries may be able to win compensation for medical bills, lost wages or other reasonable long-term care costs.
