October 23, 2019 is Unity Day against bullying to raise awareness for Bullying Prevention month. Unity Day encourages everyone to wear orange in support of bullying prevention and to foster the idea that people should be safe from bullying. Bullying is a common concern, especially for youth, and awareness campaigns help acknowledge the importance of bully prevention.
What is bullying?
Bullying can include teasing, isolation, rumors, threats, physical harm and cyber bullying. Many people commit acts of bullying without considering how their statements or actions affect other people, especially children. Additionally, many bullies are committing the actions because they themselves have been victims of bullying and are lashing out on others.
What can bullying cause?
Many people who suffer bullying will experience common concerns, such as anxiety, depression, difficulty sleeping, suicidal thoughts or actions, and lack of an ability to adjust. According to Center for Disease Control (CDC), suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people. Bully victims are more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to additional studies.
What can you do to help?
Make sure your child’s school and teachers provide clear expectations related to bullying activities with clearly defined consequences. Encourage your child to talk to you if they experience bullying and be open to what they have to say. Teach your child the importance of treating people with respect so they do not become the bully.
If your child experiences bullying and they are physically harmed, contact an attorney to discuss your case. It is up to you to hold people accountable for their actions.
