During September, many national and international organizations spread awareness and celebrate the deaf community. The goals of National Deaf Awareness Month and International Week of the Deaf are to emphasize the importance of promoting deaf human rights, increasing inclusiveness, and expanding awareness of deaf issues, people, and culture.
Overcoming Every Day Challenges
Many people without hearing impairment are often unaware of the daily challenges of living with hearing loss or deafness. Individuals with hearing loss and deafness rely on their other senses more heavily, such as to read lips, or to feel sound vibrations with their bodies. Others often use writing and reading to communicate with individuals who don’t know sign language. Using sign language is very helpful to the deaf community and often provides the best communication for those who are unable to hear.
During the current pandemic, the deaf community has been impacted by an additional communication barrier created by masks. While masks are important to wear, it quickly became clear that an alternative face shield was needed. Individuals who suffer from hearing loss often rely upon reading lips which isn’t possible when someone uses a face covering. Masks and similar face coverings also muffle sound, making those with hearing loss struggle more than usual to hear others. Also, individuals who suffer hearing loss often use sign language and mouth words. People cannot view these actions when performed under a mask.
It’s important to recognize and be aware of communication barriers and to acknowledge ways that society can improve communication and inclusiveness for all individuals. Inclusiveness and open communication improve understanding between all people and also enhance overall quality of life for everyone.
