It is devastating to be involved when there is a death in a crash, but these kind of accidents happen every day. Crashes involving small passenger vehicles, pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicyclists are more likely to result in deaths than those in semi-truck and large commercial vehicles. However, anyone can be killed in a crash.
If you are in a crash, immediately take notes of what happened at the scene. Stay calm and check on all people involved, noting if anyone is injured. Those capable of providing help to the injured should attempt to help. No one should be moved unless it is necessary for their safety.
What should you do if there is a death in a crash you’re involved in?
Immediately call 911. Next, those not breathing should be given CPR by someone familiar with the technique. If CPR will not provide benefit to the individual, it is best to not move the person’s body. If the current position places the body at risk, then moving the body may be necessary. For instance, if a person is killed and lying in the roadway, it may be acceptable to move the body to a safe location. If there is a chance the person may be revived, moving him or her could reduce the risk of recovery. From there, wait for the ambulance or emergency help to arrive.
The person causing the crash may be held liable for wrongful death claims and injuries others suffer in the crash. Merdes Law Office has helped injured Alaskans for more than 30 years, it’s who we are. And while we hope you never need us… We’re here if you do.
