Summer months are a great time to barbecue with the family and friends while enjoying the nice weather. Sadly, extended daylight hours and warmer weather is often accompanied with the risk of people drinking and driving. This means it is up to you to drive safer and avoid other drivers that may be driving while intoxicated.
In the U.S., 29 people die daily in motor vehicle crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers.
Drinking is a popular activity around the country and Fairbanks, Alaska falls on the list of drunkest cities in the country. Fairbanks is named the 18th drunkest city in America with a 22.7% excessive drinking rate. Anchorage is not far behind with a 22.2% excessive drinking rate. The statistics also show that 37.8% of driving deaths in the state are a result of alcohol or involve alcohol in some way.
What does that mean for your safety?
You should be more cautious while on the roads. Look for signs of a drunk driver, especially when traveling late at night. Signs include: 1) problems staying in the lanes; 2) speed or braking difficulties; 3) awareness – like driving the wrong direction; and 4) difficulty making judgments – like tailgating. Call the local police to report the driver if you suspect someone may be driving under the influence of alcohol. Stay away from the other driver when possible to avoid being involved in an accident.
If you are struck by someone who has had too much to drink, it is within your rights to file a claim and hold him or her accountable for their actions.
