Driving through a dark intersection without lit traffic lights can be intimidating for a new driver. When a traffic light is out without warning, it can be dangerous. If you approach an unlit intersection be sure to come to a full stop and observe all oncoming traffic to ensure you, and others, pass through safely.
Power outages, construction, and routine maintenance are all common reasons for an intersection to be unlit. It is important to know what to do before you are in the situation.
How To Navigate An Unlit Intersection In Alaska
If a signal does not have any bulbs functioning, there is no other signal head in operation for your direction, and there is no one directing traffic, the intersection is uncontrolled. You must stop. Yield to traffic approaching the intersection on your right. Exercise extreme caution and proceed only when safe to do so.
Report this condition to the nearest police department. If there is a police officer, firefighter, or flag person directing traffic at an unlit intersection, you must follow their directions.
If you, or someone you know, suffers injuries due to another drivers negligence, it is important to hold them accountable. Safer roadways in Alaska are only possible with safer drivers.
