May is Global Employee Health & Fitness Month (GEHFM). The month is used to internationally promote and observe health and fitness in the workplace. In a continued effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, many people are continuing to work from home this month. Working from home has its own unique challenges that many people have been experiencing the past few weeks. If you find yourself in a rut while working from home, try these wellness techniques to maintain a sense of normalcy during this trying time.
Maintaining A Sense Of Normalcy
It can be difficult to maintain a normal schedule when working from home, but it is important to develop a sense of normalcy. Create a schedule and stick to it, going to sleep at your regular time and continuing regular meal times. If you find yourself getting away from a schedule, get back on track to ensure mental and physical well-being.
Another tip is to create a morning routine. If you do not already have a routine in place, it can be beneficial to develop one. It can be easy to roll out of bed and not get dressed but force yourself to normalize your day.
Respect Your Work Space
As family members get used to having you at home, they may interrupt more often not understanding your work load. Children, spouses and other family members need to respect boundaries. Create rules and enforce those rules to maintain your mental health and create a sense of separation between work and your personal life. It is helpful to have a designated area in your home for work. At the end of the work day, leave the designated area and focus on your personal needs or family needs.
Fitness
Fitness is important when working from home. Schedule breaks throughout the day to get up and stretch. Stretch arms, legs, back and neck. Working at a desk all day can make muscles tight. Walk around to release muscle tightness. Do a few laps around your house inside or outside to keep blood flowing.
When possible, leave home – even if just for a walk outside. Getting out of the house is important to your physical and mental health when working from home.
This trying time is hard for many people but with a few mindful accommodations, you can maintain a healthy lifestyle and balance.
