Ever year, Epilepsy Awareness Month occurs in November. This month brings awareness and involvement to the neurological condition known as epilepsy. About 3.4 million people in the United States have epilepsy. There are many causes of epilepsy, but most are unknown. Bringing awareness and encouraging people to learn about epilepsy can bring a community together. The more knowledge an individual has about epilepsy, the better they will understand the condition.
What is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a brain condition that causes someone to have seizures. It can affect children and adults. Epilepsy is one of the most common disorders of the nervous system. A seizure occurs when there is an interruption in the normal brain signals. The brain consists of nerve cells that communicate with each other through electrical activity. When one or more parts of the brain have abnormal electrical signals that interrupt the normal brain signals, a seizure occurs. Having a fever, high or low blood sugar or a concussion can trigger a seizure. If you have two or more seizures with unknown causes it is likely you have epilepsy.
