Valentine’s Day
Happy Valentine’s Day from the Merdes Law Office. February 14th is a day for the celebration of love in multiple countries across the globe and has an intriguing and complicated history. Although its origins remain unclear, the day’s message remains the same: show love.
A Day For Romance and Appreciation
Over history, there have been three Saints who bore the name Valentine. They all share a similar story: fighting for love’s cause. One Saint Valentine performed weddings for lovers during a time when young soldiers were prohibited from marrying. Therefore, he would wed young lovers in secret ceremonies. Later on, another saint by the same name fell in love with his captive’s daughter. These two Valentines remind us the human spirit is driven by instinctive desires all can relate to: love and connection.
Valentine’s Day In Modern Times
In time, written Valentine messages of love became common place. Both poetry and prose were commissioned and penned for prospective partners. However, it wasn’t until the 19th Century that pre-printed messages became available to the masses. Cheaper postage also made communicating easier and more affordable.
Cupid’s Errand
Valentine’s Day is a day of celebration of love by those of all ages. People show love and appreciation of their family, friends, and partners by giving notes, candy, and gifts.
Cupid, an impish child-like figure who instigates love by flinging arrows to unsuspecting lovers, has been a symbol of Valentine’s Day for many years. Now, we are on Cupid’s errand spreading love to all those within our sphere of influence. We send notes to our romantic interests or boost up friends and those who may need an encouraging word. Take time to spread love as Cupid would with the proverbial arrows of the written and spoken word to those around you. Maybe you’ll find love yourself. Perhaps you will even get to ask the all-important question: Will you be mine?
