Weather conditions during Alaska winter months can be harsh. Daily activities cannot halt for months out of the year, so it is important for Alaskan drivers to understand the importance of driving safe during adverse weather conditions. Headlights are extremely important, especially during the Alaska winter months and can help other drivers see you while on the road.
Visibility
In Alaskan winters visibility can be reduced throughout the day, making it necessary to use headlights throughout the day. It is especially important to use headlights roughly 30 minutes to an hour before sunset and 30 minutes to an hour after sunrise, even if you feel like the lights are not necessary. The extra light allows other drivers to see you during these times when low visibility is common.
High Beams vs. Low Beams
Many people think that high beams will help during harsh weather, however the opposite is true. Using high beams in rain, snow, sleet or fog will cause the light to reflect into the driver’s eyes. High beams are best for seeing further away but can impair another driver’s ability to see. They are best for rural roads when you are alone and need to look for animals or see further down the road.
Low beams are primary headlights and good when weather conditions make it difficult to see. Low beams rarely affect other drivers negatively unless the lights are not properly adjusted.
Adjusting Headlights
If you use them regularly and still cannot see well while driving, try to get your headlights adjusted or adjust them yourself. The task is not difficult and only takes a few tools. Make sure that if your headlight goes out, you replace it immediately. A burnt-out light can make it not only difficult to see your vehicle but dangerous for you to be on the road.
If you are in an accident due to misaligned headlights or someone not properly using their headlights, you may need to pursue claims against the other driver. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure their headlights are in working order and road safe.
