In a world where two percent of the population is homeless, many people want ideas for Helping Those With Greater Need. In the United States over half a million people struggle with homelessness daily; even though over 40% of these individuals still maintain a job. While, 11.8% live on the poverty line and 40% are one pay-check away from being in poverty or homeless. In Alaska about 2,000 people each night are homeless or without consistent shelter. Homelessness in can be deadly in the winter, especially in Alaska.
Starting The New Year
As we begin 2021, many are still struggling because of 2020. It can be hard to know how to help or do the most good in our community, especially with Covid-19 limiting our ability to volunteer safely for all. Often when we think of these things it can feel overwhelming as to where to start.
How To Help
Small steps lead to big change. Looking at the big picture will help in many ways, including but not limited to volunteering your time (safely), donating goods, showing empathy and respecting those who are homeless is a good start. Educating yourself on the issue can create greater change for the better.
When donating, people often think of clothing and bedding. However, personal hygiene and toiletry items are high in need. Items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, women’s monthly supplies (a high need, low donation item), and diapers for babies and toddlers. Locally, you can find shelters that need assistance, and many update their website for items they need currently or frequently.
