Alaska is known for its incredible wildlife, scenic views, and dramatic weather. Many people, whether residents or visitors, embrace the opportunity to explore what Alaska’s vast wilderness has to offer. Enjoy your adventures and stay safe by being prepared, aware, and cautious while hiking Alaskan trails.
Planning A Hike
Before going on a hike be sure to consider the many variables at play to reduce the amount of risks along your trek. Stay up to date on local wildlife sightings and weather predictions. Plan ahead on where to meet up, what route to take on the trail, and when everyone will be back home. Always let someone know your complete plan in case of an emergency situation.
Consider each individual of your hiking group and have realistic expectations of your intended hike. Attempting a leisurely hike with a fast paced group may not be enjoyable for everyone, and vice versa. Be aware of who has medical knowledge, outdoor skills, and the ability to read maps and compasses. Determine well before leaving for a hike what role each person will play in the group and make sure everyone is on the same page.
If hiking with small children or pets, evaluate their needs as well when planning the hiking route. Consider additional breaks to rest, drink water, eat a snack, and to just enjoy being in nature.
Expect The Unexpected
Be prepared for weather changes, delays, and coming across wildlife. Pack extra food and water, emergency gear, and a first aid kit. Wear adequate clothing for predicted weather conditions and bring extra layers for the possibility of unpredictable changes. Bring extra sunscreen, bug dope, and bear spray with you just in case you need them. Take hiking safety and precautions seriously to avoid walking into a dangerous situation.
There are many hiking trails to explore across the state. Some of the most popular and easy-going hikes in Alaska are closer than you may think. Be prepared, stay safe, and have a great time hiking in Alaska.
