November has been Homeless Youth Awareness Month since 2007. Various organizations and campaigns provide education to the public and advocate for youth and families experiencing homelessness. Not only have children and young adults lost their homes, communities, friends, and routines, but also the sense of stability and safety.
Know The Facts
Over 4 million youth are estimated to be homeless each year in America. Many homeless youth are also victims of trauma or poor mental health. A March 2019 report found the most prominent factors leading to youth homelessness were: family conflict and poor family dynamics, a child’s sexual orientation, sexual activity, school problems, pregnancy and substance use.
Most young people who undergo homelessness are age twelve or older. Often times these children have ran away from a traumatizing or abusive living situation. There are many different signs to watch for that may indicate a young person is homeless, such as frequent absences from school or poor hygiene and nutrition. Kids struggling to have school supplies and parental signatures could be going through an extreme situation like homelessness.
Help Others
The Salvation Army has many programs in place that contribute to ending the poverty, abuse and neglect cycles of homeless children. Many Salvation Army locations have an “Adopt a Child” program allowing donors to pay for a child in need directly.
Support those suffering of homelessness in your community by volunteering or making a donation to a local non-profit organization. Find out what you can do to help youth in need this November.
The Merdes Law Office has been helping Alaskans for more than 30 years. And while we hope you never need us… We’re here if you do.
