Impeding traffic occurs when a driver slows or blocks the normal flow of traffic. This can be dangerous and frustrating for other drivers causing accidents or road rage.
Pass On The Left
When traveling on a multi-lane road or highway, the left lane is intended for passing. Slower drivers should stay in the right lane, even if they are traveling the speed limit. In Alaska, “No person may drive a motor vehicle so slowly as to impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with statutes, regulations, or ordinances.” according to Alaska code 13 AAC 02.295.
Maintain The Flow Of Traffic
It is important to maintain the flow of traffic. Never drive slower in the left lane to “teach others a lesson”. Intentionally driving slower can make other drivers feel road rage and cause an accident.
If weather conditions are bad, it may be necessary to go slower then the posted speed limit. It is important however to keep up with the flow of traffic, especially in adverse weather conditions. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed due to the flow of traffic, pull over and let other cars pass.
Impeding traffic can be just as dangerous as speeding in traffic. All drivers should work to maintain the flow of traffic and be safe.
