When you head out on the road, the last thing you expect is to end up in a car crash. You shouldn’t have to worry about negligent drivers making your ride dangerous, but you’re always at risk when traveling in a car. Help yourself, and other Alaskans, stay safe this summer by being aware and cautious while driving.
Car Accidents In Alaska
Summer accidents are on the rise on Glenn Highway, according to paramedics in Alaska. An Aug. 12, 2017 report discusses the problem that seems to happen annually. The first several miles of Glenn Highway have seen an increase in crashes in 2017, the Anchorage Fire Department reports. There were at least six separate collisions between North Eagle River exit and Muldoon Road, which is around three times the normal rate seen in 2015 and 2016. In the Chugiak-Eagle River area there were around 21 collisions.
The Alaska Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office stated that Anchorage led the state in the total number of fatal crashes between 2011 and 2015. Most take place along Glenn Highway and other main roadways.
Interestingly, although bad weather can be a problem in Alaska, most crashes actually took place during summer months. Fatal accidents are more common in the evening, but emergency responders saw incidents at all times of the day.
National Rise In Car Accidents
Despite current limitations due to the pandemic, roadways across the country have become riskier. According to the National Safety Counsel, compared to March of 2019, fatality rates per miles driven increased by 14% this March.
Be aware of increased numbers of pedestrians and cyclists when driving. Many people are trying to safely social distance while still enjoying the outdoors. Drive safely by practicing defensive driving, obeying all speed limits, and wearing your seat belt.
If you or someone you know has been injured in a car accident due to someone else’s negligence, it’s important to hold those liable accountable. Not only is it the right thing to do, it also creates safer roads for everyone.
