August 1-7, 2021 is International Assistance Dog Week (IADW). IADW purpose is to “recognize all the devoted, hardworking assistance dogs helping individuals mitigate their disability related limitations.” The organization works to promote assistance dogs and resources for those in need of assistance dogs.
Background
International Assistance Dog Week was established through the efforts of Marcie Davis. Ms. Davis is a paraplegic and has been a part of the community for over 35 years. Ms. Davis is the author of Working Like Dogs: The Service Dog Guidebook. The book is a resource tool, which includes personal stories and practical tips for the reader about service dogs. Also, she began the organization Working Like Dogs to honor assistance dogs around the world and sponsor International Assistance Dog Week.
How You Can Participate
Many places host local events during IADW, one can promote a local event through Assistance Dog Week organization website. As well as, find events in your area. People can also volunteer time and/or money to the training and placing assistance dogs through Assistance Dogs International. IADW also provides contact information for like minded organizations and services, like the International Association of Assistance Dog Partners (IAADP).
