December 3rd marks International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD). Since 1945, the United Nations (UN) has been committed to creating “inclusive, accessible and sustainable societies and communities.” The UN strives to keep this an active part of their policies and practices. In 1948 the UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in an effort to further their goals. In 1992, the UN called for a day of recognition for those living with disabilities.
2021 International
The theme for 2021 is “Fighting for Rights in the Post-COVID Era.” The day is meant to celebrate and bring awareness to the “…challenges, barriers and opportunities for those living with disabilities.” The IDPWD works to educate, provide services and guidance to those needing assistance. As the organization is international, it is important to reach out to agencies in your local area.
Local Resources and How to Help
In Alaska, contact the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services and Olmstead Rights. Both provide resources for advocacy and assistance. However, if you do not require these services you can always help the cause. You can volunteer in your local area and you can donate directly to the IDPWD. The International Day of Persons with Disabilities organization has come a long way and educating yourself is another way you can help support the cause.
