Kids get hurt in a number of ways, but many accidents that take place can be prevented. Here are a few tips to keep your child safe from falls or fall hazards at home or while in other locations.
What should you do to reduce a risk of injuries when you’re away?
First, if you’re planning to leave your child with a babysitter or daycare, take the time to review the facility. Know where your child will be sleeping or will be changed, if diapers are still necessary. Check for places where your child could fall if left unattended, like changing tables without railings or beds without safety sides. If you see worrisome areas, express your concern to the babysitter or daycare.
What can you do at home to lower your liability risk?
Any time your child visits friends or when you have children come to your house, remember the power of the safety gate. Stairs that children can’t access are the safest. Make sure children who are young walk up the stairs with an adult to prevent taking a spill.
What should you do when you take your kids to a store?
When you are at a store, keep an eye open for ladders or step stools. These are commonly used by workers to put away stock. The store should have the right safety precautions to block people from getting on the equipment. Without a watchful eye, it’s possible for a child to climb up the unit and fall down. If the equipment isn’t marked with a sign or chain to keep your child off and your child gets hurt, you may have a claim against the facility.
