Love Conquers All Day is annually celebrated on June 3rd. It is a day to cherish loved ones. It is also a day to express gratitude and love to those who matter most.
The Day’s History
The ancient Greek philosophers identified eight different forms of love. There is familial (storge) love – a natural form of affection experienced amongst family members. Friendly (philia) love or friendship. We now describe this as platonic love after the Greek philosopher Plato. Thirdly, there is romantic (eros) love – or the love shared between two romantic partners. There is selfless or divine (agape) love – love shown for strangers, nature, or God. Ludus (playful) love describes the affections shared between young lovers. Enduring (pragma) love is love built on commitment, understanding and long-term best interests. Self-love or philautia is a concept that originated because the Greeks understood that to care for others, people must first learn to care for themselves. Finally, there is obsessive love, also known as mania.
The Roman poet Virgil is credited with originally writing “love conquers all” in his poem Eclogues. It is from Virgil and his poem that this day takes its name.
