March is National Ladder Safety Month which promotes education on the proper usage of a ladder. Ladders can be found at home and at work, such as construction sites. Accidents can occur while using a ladder which can end up fatal. “OSHA believes 100% of all ladder accidents could be prevented if proper attention to equipment and climber training were provided.” An accident can be prevented by understanding ladder safety.
Types of Ladder Accidents
There are four main types of ladder accidents. Each of these accidents can be prevented.
- Selecting the wrong type of ladder- Choosing a ladder that is too short causes you to extend the ladder’s reach. This puts the you in danger of falling off.
- Using a worn or damaged ladder- When using a worn or damaged ladder, the ladder could break without warning, causing you to fall off.
- Not maintaining proper contact on the ladder- “Always maintain a 3-point (two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand) contact on the ladder when climbing.” By using this method you can remain stable on the ladder.
- Misplacement of a ladder- The ground should be firm and level when placing a ladder. If possible, have someone hold the base of the ladder while the other climbs up the ladder. Never place a ladder in front of a door, unless the door is locked or guarded.
Choosing the Correct Ladder
When using a ladder to help with a job or task at home, make sure to pick the right one. There are four main types of ladders: step, multi-position, extension and platform ladders. Each of these ladders has a unique purpose so choose according to the job that is being performed. For example, when painting a bedroom, use a stepladder. When used correctly, you will not have to strain yourself while painting. Research ladder ratings, maximum load capacity and the material the ladder is made of, before purchasing a ladder. This will determine what kind of ladder you need. Choosing the correct ladder will decrease the chances of an accident occurring.
