January is National Bath Safety Month to raise awareness for the importance of safety during baths. National Bath Safety Month focuses heavily on children’s safety while bathing. It is also important to consider the safety of the elderly while taking baths.
Safety For Children
Children need constant supervision when taking a bath as it takes seconds for a child to slip under the water and drown. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children under the age of four be constantly supervised when bathing.
The most common cause of injury to children when bathing is falls. Small children have not built their balance enough to catch themselves if they fall in the bathtub. Homes with small children should invest in a non-slip mat and a handle or grab bar.
Safety For Elderly
Baths are beneficial for seniors but can be dangerous. Getting into and out of a bathtub may be difficult and wet surfaces cause more slip and fall accidents. Install handles for elderly family members and friends to use, invest in a non-slip mat or rug, and minimize bathroom clutter.
Good Practice
It is good practice to prepare for the needs of your family and guests by taking precaution before an accident occurs. If possible, set your hot water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent accidental burns to anyone bathing at your home. Alternatively, invest in an anti-scald device that attaches to the faucet to regulate bath water temperature.
Bath safety month is an important topic to consider for your home. Take it serious to protect your loved ones from potentially dangerous situations.
