January 10th is National Cut Your Energy Costs Day. Alaskan winters are long and cold so we are always working hard to stay warm. There are ways on how we can stay warm, save energy and money at the same time. To start, make a list of the things you can change right away. Then work on making improvements to your home to help lower your energy costs. Today is the day you to take a step forward in a big way.
How To Observe
As you start, share your favorite energy-saving tips and practices. Keep track of your changes as you go. You can include your family and friends while making the changes. Show them how the improvements reduced expenses and improved efficiency. By involving your family and friends, they will absorb this information and make changes of their own.
Here are ways to improve your energy costs:
- Ensure your heating system is in tip-top condition with annual service maintenance in order for your wood stove and boilers to perform more efficiently and cleanly.
- Replace old windows, furnaces, exterior doors with energy-efficient models.
- Turn off lights and unplug appliances when not in use.
- Switch to energy-efficient light bulbs
- Turn down thermostats.
- Find alternate transportation, such as carpooling to work with a co-worker
These are a few ways to cut energy costs in your daily life. Stay warm. Stay safe. Find ways to cut costs today.
