The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) website supplies information for youth of all ages as well as parents, caregivers, and teachers. This year, the NIDA is providing online access to educational activities. Youth and young adults may participate virtually in games and social media challenges, including a Twitter Trivia Challenge. To join, follow the hashtag #NDAFW on Twitter starting at 3:00p EDT (11:00a AKDT) on Friday, April 3, 2020.
The Dangers Of Drug Use
Using drugs, and misusing prescription medication, is not only illegal, it is extremely harmful. Serious health complications such as organ failure, seizures, and mental health issues are commonly caused by using drugs. Repeated drug use can also cause lifelong damage to the neurons of the brain.
Becoming addicted to drugs can happen to any person of any age. Those who have family or friends who use drugs are more likely to use themselves. In 2018 more than 4,500 teens succumbed to drug overdose. Of those deaths, more than two thirds were from opioid use.
Drugs in Alaska
Alaska has been under a spotlight for heightened drug use throughout the past decade, grabbing the attention of many, including RollingStone magazine. During 2016, nearly 10% of Alaskans used illicit drugs, increasing to more than 13% in 2017.
Despite the legalization of marijuana in Alaska in 2014, the common misconception that using marijuana is safe can lead to severe consequences. Some people experience symptoms of extreme nervousness, shaking, and even psychosis. Many who have tried marijuana have experienced false thoughts or reported seeing or hearing things that weren’t there after consuming high concentrations of THC.
There are many other resources providing information about the effects of drug use as well as identifying drugs and paraphernalia. It’s important for young people to understand the consequences of drug use, as well as be educated on the different types and effects of drugs.
The Merdes Law Firm has been helping injured Alaskans for more than 30 years. It’s who we are. And while we hope you never need us … We’re here if you do. ~ Ward Merdes
