In honor of the 200th year anniversary of the historical Florence Nightingale‘s birthday, the World Health Organization announced 2020 the “International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife”. In celebration of this honor, National Nurses Week (May 6 – 12, traditionally) extends through the entire month of May.
Nurses provide invaluable services which became even more crucial during the current pandemic. Take time this month to share your appreciation of a nurse in your life.
Giving Nurses Support
The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists provides a list of special offers for nurses from companies like The North Face, Adidas and Starbucks. The AANA also provides many resources for supporting those currently in the field.
The first week of May promoted self care and the ANA Enterprise shares helpful resources for nurses. Across the country, professionals are sharing tips for adequate work-life balance, nutrition, physical activity, sleep and overall safety.
Recognition for nurses is the highlight of the second week of Nurses Month. Share your story of how a nurse has helped you, or your story of becoming a nurse, using #YON2020 and #YearOfTheNurse on social media.
The American Nurses Foundation created the Coronavirus Response Fund for the public to be able to help and thank them. The funds primary concern is providing support directly to those actively working. Donations cover costs for financial assistance, mental health support, and protection to prevent infection.
Due to the nature of their career, many in the field are less healthy than the average American. Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation is a community of professionals who share the challenges and triumphs of their careers. Additionally, all nurses may join HNHN in bettering personal wellness for themselves and others.
Becoming A Nurse
Nursing school is often very competitive and can be difficult to persevere through. Many resources are available for supporting those aspiring to the field as well as continuing professional development after nursing school.
There are many scholarships specifically targeting nursing students. AANA Learn and CRNA Knowledge Network are dedicated to helping nurses continue education.
To all nurses, past, present and future, we truly thank you for your service.
