Today, February 8, 2022, is National Safer Internet Day. National Safer Internet Day always falls on the second Tuesday of February. This year, the theme is “together for a better internet”. Fittingly, today is focused upon all stakeholders coming together to make the internet a safer place. Though the goal is making the internet safer for all, the focus will always be the safety of children and the younger generation.
The Beginning
In the United States, National Safer Internet Day began in 2013. Currently, this holiday for awareness and progress in celebrated in over 100 countries worldwide. Accordingly, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the European Commission continue to collaborate for this mission. However, they are joined by groups like Microsoft, Twitter, LinkedIn, and many more.
How to Observe
There are many ways to observe this important day, including the following key steps:
- First, Speak up about cyberbullying.
- Secondly, Be a part of a campaign in your school, organization, business, or home.
- Third, Contact policymakers and urge them to be a part of the solution.
- Fourth, Join the conversation by using #SaferInternetDay on social media.
These are just a few of the many ways to aide in making the internet a safer place. At the end of the day, the most important thing is to speak up. We should try to encourage children to do the same. To access resources and join the discussion for a safer internet, visit ConnectSafely.org.
