Annually, on the last Wednesday of May, National Senior Health and Fitness Day is celebrated. Today is about ensuring the health of senior citizens. The goal is to help senior Americans stay fit and healthy. Organizations around the country hold events to spread the word about the importance of eldercare and their health. Neighborhood parks, gyms, retirement communities and nursing homes are a few places that help celebrate this special day.
History of National Senior Health and Fitness Day
This day is commemorated by the Mature Market Resource Center, which is a national-level clearinghouse organization for the older adults’ markets which work together with non-profit organizations. Surprisingly, today is the largest health and wellness movement for seniors in the U.S. Now more than ever, it is time that we explore options of physical activity that are available for seniors. Further, we need to acknowledge the importance of nutrition and exercise for the prevention of ill health. For a senior who can not be independent anymore, they can live in an assisted-living community that provides care. By living in this type of community, their health can be monitored.
How to Observe
The best way would be to spend time with the elderly. Take a moment to spend time with you grandparents, parents or in-laws. Or you could organize an event in your neighborhood for the seniors. Lastly, volunteer at a health fair to spread the word. Learn more about our local health fair here.
